Use of some electronic devices allowed for HK airlines

Passengers of Hong Kong-registered aircraft may be allowed to use certain portable electronic devices (PED) such as smartphones, e-readers and tablet computers.

Cathay Pacific Airways and Hong Kong Dragon Airlines may allow the safe use of the devices in non-transmitting/flight mode during flight if the aircraft is certified to be PED tolerant and related operating procedures are in place, Ming Pao reported Tuesday, citing the Civil Aviation Department.

However, the use of devices is not allowed under specific conditions such as when the aircraft is in low visibility operation, or when passengers are told not to by the crew.

Voice calls, SMS and data roaming are still prohibited during flight.

Operators of non-Hong Kong registered aircraft should follow the relevant policy of their respective country of registry, the report said.
