Ukraine ceasefire totters as new fighting erupts

Fighting continued in at least two cities in eastern Ukraine despite a ceasefire that Kiev and pro-Russia rebels agreed on Friday, but the pact brought some respite from weeks of deadly violence to many towns in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Explosions and shooting broke out on Sunday near the Donetsk airport, which Ukrainian forces have struggled to hold for months, the Wall Street Journal reported.  There were also reports of fighting at a checkpoint outside Mariupol, a port city in the Donetsk region that Kiev still holds, the report said.

A woman had been killed and three others injured in Mariupol since the peace deal was struck, local officials said.

A spokesman for Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council confirmed that fighting occurred near Donetsk and Mariupol, but said the peace deal remained in place.

In separate statements on Saturday, the Kremlin and Kiev said Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart, Petro Poroshenko, had spoken by phone and agreed that the ceasefire was largely holding.
