Chinese world champion hurdler and Olympic gold medalist Liu Xiang has married his actress girlfriend Ge Tian.
The marriage was confirmed by Liu’s father to Xinmin Evening News after photos of the pair went viral on social media.
The elder Liu said the two met after the 2012 London Olympics when he was recovering from an injury he suffered at the Games.
She had since stayed with him throughout the healing period, the elder Liu said.
On Tuesday, Liu posted a photo on his microblog showing him and Ge leaning against a hurdle. Not long afterwards, the couple was spotted in a Shanghai marriage registry office.
Another photo showing the newlyweds leaving the registry holding bouquets began making the rounds on the internet.
Liu won gold medals in the 110-meter hurdles at the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004 and at the World Championships in Osaka in 2007.
At the London Olympics, Liu crashed into the first hurdle after pulling his Achilles tendon and hobbled to the finish line on one leg.
Ge, who was born in 1990, graduated from the Central Academy of Drama in 2012 and has performed in several TV dramas.
She is said to be a daughter of a senior executive of China Poly Group Corp., a company backed by the People’s Liberation Army.
