Vietnam has accused crew members of Chinese boats of harassing fishing vessels and beating Vietnamese fishermen near contested islands in the South China Sea, Wall Street Journal reported.
Personnel from Chinese boats searched and seized equipment from three Vietnamese fishing vessels on three occasions last month near the Paracel Islands, Vietnam’s foreign ministry was quoted as saying in a statement Wednesday.
“These activities violated Vietnam’s sovereignty in the East Sea (South China Sea) and international laws,” the ministry said, adding that a formal complaint had been lodged with the Chinese embassy in Hanoi.
Meanwhile, a Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman described the accusation as groundless, saying that on Aug. 15 a Vietnamese vessel trespassed into China’s maritime territory. Chinese authorities confiscated explosives on the vessel, she said.
“We urge the Vietnamese side to better manage its fishing activities and stop trespassing on Chinese territory,” spokeswoman Hua Chunying was quoted as saying.
