China dropped from second batch of iPhone 6 launches

Mainland China is not included in Apple Inc.’s second round of initial launches of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, a development that could further boost cross-border demand for the new models.

On Sept. 26, Apple will start taking orders for the new phones in 17 countries, according to a technology website 9to5mac.com.

These countries are Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland,  Ireland,  Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan and Turkey.

Although Apple will start accepting orders in these countries from Sept. 26, some carriers are accepting pre-orders before that date. It’s unclear when exactly the devices will be shipped to these countries, the website said.

Apple’s official website previously said the new iPhones will be available in mainland China on Sept. 26 right after its launch early Wednesday morning (Hong Kong time), but the country was removed from the list several hours later, Apple Daily reported Thursday.

Meanwhile, buyers in Hong Kong can start placing orders for the iPhones through their Online Apple Store after 3 p.m. today, and delivery is within two weeks.

But in the few hours before 3 p.m., repeated attempts to enter the Online Apple Store failed and the message “We are busy updating the Apple Store for you and will be back soon” was shown.

Buyers can also register for the new phones at the Apple Retail Store starting at 8 a.m. on Sept. 16 and get them in person on Sept. 19. Each buyer is limited to buying two iPhones at one time.

Mobile Empire Ltd. at Sin Tat Plaza in Mong Kok told the newspaper there will definitely be huge speculation for the phones in Hong Kong due to the late launch on the mainland.

The price of a new iPhone 6 Plus in gold color that is equipped with 128GB storage can go up as high as HK$20,000 (US$ 2,580) in the grey market, compared with official selling price of HK$8,088.

Buyers in Hong Kong as well as those in Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore, and the United States will have the privilege of getting their hands on the new gadgets on Sept. 19 ahead of the others.
