Nothing has changed for the London cab, the iconic black taxi that will make its debut in Shanghai next month.
Except the color. It will be an eye-catching gold, Shanghai Daily reported Friday, citing Qiangsheng Taxi Co. which will operate the fleet.
And the price. It will be 5 yuan more expensive than regular taxis, with the flagdown fare at 19 yuan (US$3.09) for the first three kilometers, subject to approval by transport authorities.
Pictures of the vehicles were released yesterday showing them in the final stages of production.
Geely Automobile is making 200 of the TX4 taxis which are the same model as the London black taxis, affectionately known as London cabs.
Geely, which also owns Volvo, took over Manganese Bronze Holdings, maker of the original London Black Cab, in 2013.
Qiangsheng, Shanghai’s largest taxi company, said the first batch of 50 London cabs will hit the roads as early as the Chinese national day holiday which starts Oct. 1.
The cabs are spacious and are primarily aimed at providing service to the elderly and disabled customers. They will have accessibility fittings and will take bookings through their dispatch systems, the report said.
