Car driver’s arrest sought over boy’s thrill ride

Pictures widely circulating online since Sunday showed that a driver totally ignored the safety of a young boy riding in the car, and some netizens are calling on the police to arrest the driver whose identity could be traced through the car’s plate number, Apple Daily reported Monday.

The photos show a boy, probably around seven years old, standing on the car’s seat and sticking half of his body out of a Mercedes Benz while it was cruising on Junction Road in Kowloon.

The boy seemed to be enjoying the experience, with the wind blowing on his face, but netizens said it was a very dangerous act. A sudden stop or a sharp swerve could render the boy off-balance, and an accident could occur.

Some netizens called the driver “brain dead” while others said he was “playing with life”.

Data from the Transport Department shows that the car was imported in April and is owned by a company, the report said.

Ringo Lee, chairman of the Institute of the Motor Industry Hong Kong, said if the pictures were genuine, the boy violated the law because he was not wearing a seat belt.

He said if an accident occurred and the boy were thrown out of the car, the car owner would not get compensation from any insurance company.

Parents should never allow their children to do such dangerous acts, Lee said.
