Xi Jinping: Beijing support for Hong Kong will not change

President Xi Jinping has reassured Hong Kong that Beijing will continue to support its development.

Xi said “one country, two systems” has worked well, contributing to the stability and prosperity of Hong Kong, government broadcaster RHK reported Monday.

Xi made the remarks during a meeting with a group of business leaders led by Tung Chee-hwa, Hong Kong’s first post-colonial chief executive.

“The central government won’t change its basic rules and policies toward Hong Kong and we will continue to support its democratic development and stick to the ‘one country, two systems’ and the Basic Law,” Xi said.

The meeting was attended by Zhang Dejiang, chairman of the standing committee of the National People’s Congress, Vice President Li Yuanchao, Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office chief Wang Guangya and Beijing Liaison Office director Zhang Xiaoming.

The Hong Kong delegation included Li Ka-shing, Lee Shau-kee and 60 other business leaders and senior politicians, according to media reports.
