Beijing’s game: A canteen lesson for students

Students visiting a canteen at the Chinese University of Hong Kong were flummoxed recently as they studied the breakfast combos on offer.

There were only three set meals on the menu, with the details laid out as follows:

A: Omelet set with chicken, toast and salad

B: Chicken set with toast, omelet and salad

C: Toast with chicken, salad and omelet

Asked to choose between the three options, the students pored through the choices carefully to determine which one they should go with.

And it was not too long before they came to the realization that someone was trying to take them for a ride — all the three options were in fact just the same meal, except that they bore different names and carried different prices.

Now, for the real story!

All this was a show put on by a student activist group to remind their comrades that the political reform plan outlined by the central government only gives “fake universal suffrage” to Hong Kong, without any real choice for the people.

The activist group recorded students’ reactions to the menu with a concealed camera and posted the video online on Sunday.

As per the footage, the reaction of the students was varied. Some were amused while others became angry and cursed the canteen operator.

The video has become popular, garnering more than 127,000 views so far.
