Former Chinese president Jiang Zemin attended a concert celebrating the 65th anniversary of the People’s Republic in Beijing on Monday, his first public appearance since May, Ming Pao Daily reported.
Jiang, 88, looked well as he entered the concert hall, joining other past and current Communist Party leaders, including President Xi Jinping, the report said. His appearance dispels earlier rumors that he had died of cancer or was seriously ill.
Also attending the concert were retired leaders Li Peng, Wu Bangguo, Li Lanqing, Zeng Qinghong and He Guoqiang. Xi’s predecessor Hu Jintao was absent.
Observers said Jiang’s high-profile appearance with Xi was a signal that the former leader, who remains an influential figure in the Communist Party hierarchy, supports Xi’s anti-corruption drive, the report said.
