Opponents target protest leaders’ families

Occupy Central opponents have published the addresses and phone numbers of key protest figures online, urging people to take over their homes and give them a taste of their own medicine, Ming Pao Daily reported Tuesday.

An employee of Midland Realty said people should visit the home of student protest leader Joshua Wong and “greet” his parents.

Midland disavowed the employee’s comment and said it will discipline anyone who violates company regulations, the report said.

Private information about Jimmy Lai, publisher of the outspoken Apple Daily newspaper, Wong and fellow student leader Chow Wing-hong was posted online two days after violent clashes broke out between student protesters and rival groups in Mong Kok district.

Wong said it is unacceptable that the protesters’ family members are being targeted and warned that attacks by pro-establishment groups could intensify. However, Wong added that the address provided by the Midland Realty employee is not his home.

Occupy Central organizers said their families should be spared from harassment.

Co-founder Chan Kin-man again apologized for the public inconvenience caused by the civil disobedience movement and blamed the government for the situation.

Chan said the sooner the government responds to the protesters’ demands, the earlier the street protest will end.

He called on protesters to stay clear of residential areas and confine themselves to Admiralty to minimize the impact on the everyday lives of citizens.
