Burglars broke into the home of a Hong Kong property billionaire and made off with HK$10 million (US$1.29 million) worth of valuables, Ming Pao Daily reported Wednesday.
Cecil Chao, chairman of Cheuk Nang (Holdings) Ltd. (0131.HK), stopped briefly to answer questions about the break-in before driving off in a Rolls-Royce with his young girlfriend.
He would not confirm the exact amount of the stolen items but said police investigations are continuing.
The incident happened on Tuesday morning when burglars entered Chao’s Villa Cecil home in Pok Fu Lam district.
They broke open a safe in a washroom and stole a quantity of watches, jewelry and some unspecified antique pieces, the report said.
A two-meter iron rod, believed to have been used by the burglars to gain entry, was found in the washroom.
Police said the suspects may have entered the house through a bedroom window.
Chao, 78, famously hosted the Miss Tourism International (Hong Kong) pageant in his luxury complex while serving as a juror. He invited 19 Miss China contestants, dressed in bikini, to lunch in his home.
In 2012, the flamboyant tycoon offered US$65 million to any man who could convince his lesbian daughter to marry him.
