A Chinese woman turned down a 1 million yuan (US$162,991) gift from a grateful man she plucked from the street and fed 21 years ago, according to state news agency Xinhua.
Dai Xingfen, a noodle shop owner in Xianju, Zhejiang province, was offered the money by He Rongfeng, now a succesful businessman, for her act of kindness.
He, who owns a furniture business in Shenyang province, was paying a debt of gratitude for an incident wherein Dai brought him and two other starving teens to her home and gave them a big meal, the report said.
“I just did what I had to do… I don’t need the money but I’m moved that you still remember me after all these years,” Dai reportedly told He.
The meeting happened in 2013. Xinhua reported it on Wednesday.
He grew up in a poor family in Sichuan, where he began working for a living as teenager.
“When my friends and I arrived in Xianju, we had spent our last penny and had to beg for food,” he said.
All the years that He was building his business and being successful, he kept Dai in mind, along with her advice to be “honest and trustworthy”, according to the report.
He visited Dai again during the national day holiday in October. She turned down 50,000 yuan cash from him.
