Israel calls car crash that killed baby a ‘terror attack’

A three-month-old baby died and eight other people were hurt when a Palestinian rammed his car into pedestrians at a Jerusalem light railway station on Wednesday.

The driver was shot by police as he fled, and later died of injuries in a hospital, Reuters reported.

Israeli police described the incident as a “terrorist attack”. The driver was identified as Adbel-Rahman Shaloudi, 21, a Palestinian from East Jerusalem.

“We can confirm that this was a terrorist attack. The driver … is a resident of Silwan and has a terrorist background. He has served time in jail for terror activity,” police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld was quoted as saying.

No Palestinian group claimed responsibility for the attack.

In Washington, the US State Department said the baby was “reportedly an American citizen”, but did not elaborate.

Two of the injured pedestrians were in serious condition, police said.

Silwan, a neighborhood bordering on Jerusalem’s old walled city, has been the scene of violence in past weeks with Palestinians protesting against Israeli settlers moving into houses in the predominantly Palestinian-populated district, the report said.
