Hong Kong affairs are purely China’s internal affairs and Britain should not interfere in any way, says Liu Xiaoming, the Chinese ambassador to the United Kingdom.
Hong Kong’s political reform must follow the Basic Law and the decisions of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress. No foreign government has the right to intervene, Liu told The House, a UK Parliament magazine, in an interview.
He described the street occupation in Hong Kong since late September as illegal.
The protesters have disrupted law and order, “poisoned Hong Kong’s economic environment and tarnished Hong Kong’s international image”, he said.
“If unchecked, they will only reverse the progress of democracy in Hong Kong.”
Dealing with Occupy Central in accordance with the law and maintaining the territory’s stability is in line with the wishes of the majority of the people, he said.
Liu called on Britain to do more to promote Hong Kong’s stability and prosperity as well as the healthy development of China-UK relations.
