HKUST group puts up 689 umbrellas for graduation photos

ProgressUST, a student group of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, has prepared 689 yellow umbrellas as props for graduates taking photos at their graduation ceremony next Thursday and Friday.

ProgressUST said on its Facebook page: “689 umbrellas, we want ‘689’ to see our umbrellas.” The number refers to Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying who was elected with 689 votes from the 1,200-member election committee.

The student group on Thursday sketched out the shape of a huge umbrella in the campus using the yellow umbrellas.

The umbrellas will be sold for HK$17 each after the graduation ceremony and the net proceeds will be used to buy supplies for the pro-democracy protesters at the Occupy sites.

At the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Lingnan College, some students unfurled yellow umbrellas during their graduation ceremony.

Over at the Vocational Training Council, executive director Carrie Yau told students to consider whether their political action will spoil the atmosphere and make it harder for universities to invite guests to their ceremony.
