British banker detained in grisly double-murder case

A 29-year-old British banker will appear in court in Hong Kong on Monday to face murder charges after police found corpses of two women in an upscale apartment complex in Wan Chai district.

Sources identified the man as Rurik Jutting, who appears to have left his job at Bank of America Merrill Lynch recently, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Police were called early Saturday to the scene where they found a naked woman, said to be aged between 25 and 30, with knife wounds to her neck and buttocks in the living room.

The second woman’s body, also with neck injuries, was discovered in a suitcase on the apartment’s balcony, police said. A knife was seized at the scene.

The victims are believed to be sex workers from Indonesia, local media reported.

Jutting moved to Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s Hong Kong operation in July 2013 after working for three years in the bank’s London offices, the Journal said.

The case is likely to shock Hong Kong, where violent crime is rare.

The city was previously riveted by the 2003 murder of a Merrill Lynch banker by his wife, Nancy Kissel, in a case that came to be known as the “milkshake murder”.
