Watson expands into Chinese medicine services

A.S. Watson Group, the retail unit of conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa Ltd., is expanding its services to tap a growing market for Chinese medicine, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reported Wednesday.

Eight Watson stores will launch out-patient Chinese medicine services by the end of the year, the report said, citing general manager Diane Cheung.

Ten more stores are in the pipeline and are expected to come on stream next year.

Watson operates more than 180 stores in Hong Kong and Macau, more than 50 of which have pharmacy counters manned by 200 registered pharmacists and health consultants.

Chinese medicine is increasingly popular in Hong Kong, with a growing number of people more concerned about health issues.

The number of people using Chinese medicine services in public hospitals and clinics has seen double-digit growth annually, Cheung said, citing Hospital Authority data.

The authority operates 18 out-patient Chinese medicine centers which can serve up to one million visitors.
