West Island Line, a rapid transit section of the Hong Kong MTR metro system, will open on Dec. 28, Apple Daily reported Tuesday, citing Michael Tien, chairman of the Legislative Council transport committee.
The new line will be rolled out in two stages, starting with the Universtiy of Hong Kong and Kennedy Town sections. The Sai Ying Pun line will open in the first quarter next year.
The three-kilometer line, which cost HK$18.5 billion (US$2.39 billion), will connect Hong Kong’s old business district with Central.
Meanwhile, the Shatin-Central Link will be delayed to 2020 due to remedial work after relics were unearthed at the To Kwa Wan station, the report said.
The line may be opened in three stages, with the Tai Wai-Kai Tak section coming on stream in 2018.
