HK Disneyland may get green light for ferry services

The government is open to the idea of opening more sea transport services to Lantau islands, Sing Tao Daily reported, citing sources close to the Transport Department.

In particular, it is willing to study a proposal for Hong Kong Disneyland to open ferry services connecting the theme park and locations such as Discovery Bay, Peng Chau and Mui Wo, the report said, adding that the economic reasons must be strong enough to support such an initiative.

As representatives from the tourism industry have pointed out, the two hotels at Hong Kong Disneyland are often fully booked.

If ferry services are made available between the theme park and other Lantau locations with hotel facilities, tourists could be channeled to those locations, thus increasing the commercial benefits of such projects.

Of the six ferry routes operating on Lantau, three are serving Discovery Bay.

A number of factors have to be taken into account before new ferry services are approved. These include connecting transport, passenger demand, impact on existing ferry routes, availability of pier facilities, cost-efficiency and utilization of resources, the report said.
