Rioting erupted in a southern Chinese village when residents clashed with police and smashed vehicles after the local government began construction on a center to house patients with leprosy and sexually transmitted diseases.
Eight people, including five government officials and a police officer, suffered minor injuries.
The violence occurred in Sanjiang township in Haikou city near the northern coast of Hainan island, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing local authorities.
Ten government vehicles were overturned.
The villagers were angry about “environmental pollution”, the local government said on its website.
The Haikou city government has suspended the project and set up a working group to “eliminate misunderstandings”.
