Tong Ren Tang to open new Chinese medicine and wellness center

Beijing Tong Ren Tang Chinese Medicine Co. Ltd. (08138.HK) says it is opening Hong Kong’s first one-stop Chinese medical health and wellness center to meet the needs of the city’s well-heeled white-collar professionals.

‘Tong Xin Tong Le Tong Ren Tang’ will be launched on Friday, targeting mid to high-end customers. The center will offer Chinese healthcare services such as tui-na, acupuncture, scrape therapy and beauty care, and also sell Chinese medicine.

Each service will cost at least HK$300 (US$38.69) to HK$500 per session.

“Hongkongers have a fast working pace and they are under great pressure. Many of them are in the sub-healthy category… We can help them relieve their stress through our treatments,” said Ding Yongling, CEO and executive director of Tong Ren Tang.

The new center, while focusing on Chinese traditional treatments, has also incorporated some modern concepts. For instance, it will offer Japanese enzyme bath for detoxification, Ding said.

The wellness center has entailed investment of about HK$30 million. It is expected to start making profit in the middle of next year and cover the cost in three years.

The center, spread over an area of 10,000 square feet, is located in the Central business district. Ding said the company is looking at opening another center in Kowloon in the second half of next year.

Tong Ren Tang is also preparing to open similar wellness centers in New Zealand and Italy to target people in the tourist spots.

“Toscana [in Italy] is a very beautiful place, like New Zealand… If we instill the concept of ‘preserving their health’, I think it can make people relax and nourish their bodies when they travel,” she said.

Incorporated in Hong Kong in 2004, Tong Ren Tang currently has 52 retail outlets in 15 countries and regions, and offers more than 2,000 types of Chinese medicine products.
