With just 10 days left to go before Time’s 2014 “Person of the Year” poll comes to a close, the magazine’s readers have given Scholarism leader Joshua Wong Chi-fung a huge boost in votes, Apple Daily reported Friday.
By noon on Friday, Wong had risen eight notches from last week, when a list of 50 candidates was put up for votes, to third in the ranking.
Some netizens have been calling for others to vote for him.
Wong, 18, made the cover of the Time’s Asia edition cover in October.
Time has listed Wong among the 25 most influential teenagers of 2014.
The magazine will stop taking online votes on Dec. 6 and release the result on Dec. 8.
The poll result is only one of the factors taken into account in deciding the Person of the Year, and the winner will not be known until Dec. 10.
At present, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tops the list, with about 10 percent of total votes. Protesters in Ferguson, Missouri, are in second place. Their massive demonstrations in support of a black teenager slain by a police officer helped them edge out Russian President Vladimir Putin and Wong.
President Xi Jingping is in 24th place.
