The younger sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has been named senior official of the ruling Workers’ Party, giving weight to speculation that she is rising through the ranks of power to support her brother’s reign, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a state media report.
Kim Yo-jong, during a report about Kim’s visit to an animation studio, was referred to as a vice department director in the party’s central committee, the newspaper said. It was the first time she has been mentioned with a title.
“The possibility [of her taking an active government role] is very likely,” Lim Jae-cheol, a North Korea expert and professor at Korea University in Seoul, told the Journal.
Lim said photos accompanying the latest report show Kim’s sister holding a pen and a notepad alongside other senior officials. Photos released by the state media often show senior officials taking down notes as the North Korean leaders speaks during his inspection trips.
Although her precise role is unclear, the state media report named her with two senior officials in the propaganda bureau, suggesting she may have a post in that division.
Aside from Kim Yo-jong, Kim Jong-un has a brother as well as one half-brother and three half-sisters, the report said.
