A fire broke out at the headquarters of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Hong Kong Garrison in Admiralty on Monday morning, local reports said. Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
Fire and smoke were seen escaping from a building inside the compound at about 9am, shortly after riot police cleared the nearby Lung Wo Road, which was occupied by pro-democracy protesters overnight.
Firemen arrived at the compound and put out the fire at about 10am, RTHK reported.
As the building is very close to the Occupy protest site in Admiralty, many protesters took pictures of the incident and posted them on social media.
Earlier, police conducted clearance operations on Lung Wo Road, which was occupied by the protesters overnight. Officers used batons, shields and pepper spray to drive away the protesters.
As of 7 a.m., at least 31 people were injured and sent to hospital after the clearance action. Many were arrested.
