Xi urges faster military modernization

China should accelerate development of advanced new military equipment to help build a strong army and support national security, President Xi Jinping said.

Military reforms should be “guided by the objective of building a strong army”, state media quoted Xi as saying at a two-day military conference that ended in Beijing Thursday.

He called for a strategic plan to be drawn up for development of the military equipment system, in view of the changing national security situation and “different international strategic pattern”, China Daily reported.

There are strategic opportunities in building the equipment system, and a key point has been reached for its rapid development, he was quoted as saying.

New weapons must be “innovative, practical and forward-thinking to meet the demands of actual combat and fill in the weak spots of China’s existing equipment”, he said.
