Northern white rhino dies, leaving only five alive

A northern white rhino has died at a San Diego zoo, CNN reported.

The species is even closer to extinction, as there are now only five of the animals left in the world.

Angalifu, 44, died of old age Sunday at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

“With Angalifu’s passing, only five northern white rhinos are left on the planet, including Nola, our elderly female,” the zoo said in a statement.

A few of the remainder are at a wildlife conservancy in Kenya. There are none known to be left in the wild.

Rhinos are killed by poachers for their horns, which fetch tens of thousands of US dollars.

Demand is great in East Asia, where rhino horn is believed to cure various ailments.
