Hongkonger invents smart coffeemaker

Hong Kong software engineer Benson Chiu has broken the local record on Kickstarter, the world’s largest fundraising website for start-ups, with his smart coffeemaker, the Arist.

Even Starbucks, the US-based global chain of coffee shops, has expressed an interest in the Arist, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reported Thursday.

The coffeemaker, which comes with an app Chiu designed, raised US$845,000 in just a month, breaking the Hong Kong record for fundraising on Kickstarter.

His smartphone app allows users to control the Arist to tailor-make coffee to their requirements.

In partnership with his brother and Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corp., Chiu has received more than 3,000 orders from Europe, Asia, and Africa for a combined 10,000 units of the coffee machine. Funds came from backers in more than 50 countries.

Chiu attributed his success on Kickstarter to the “short and sharp” video his firm prepared, targeting investors through the website.

“We will apply for a patent,” said Chiu.

He said he and his brother will develop other products and raise funds through Kickstarter again.
