Google’s next Android OS to be built directly into cars: Reuters

Google Inc is preparing for a new version of Android that will be built directly into cars, allowing drivers to enjoy all the benefits of the Internet without even plugging in their smartphones, Reuters reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Direct integration into cars will ensure that motorists will use Google’s services every time they turn on the ignition, the report noted.

Google’s new Android M operating system is expected to be unveiled in about a year.

It will mark a major step up from the firm’s current Android Auto software, which comes with the latest version of its smartphone operating system and requires a phone to be plugged into a compatible car with a built-in screen to access streaming music, maps and other apps.

If successful, Android M will become the standard system powering a car’s entertainment and navigation features, solidifying Google’s position in a new market, the report said.

The software could potentially connect to other car components, providing Google with a valuable trove of data.
