China willing to help Russia if needed, foreign minister says

China is willing to help Russia if needed but believes its neighbor is able to overcome its economic problems, the official China Daily quoted Foreign Minister Wang Yi as saying.

The rouble has weakened about 45 percent against the US dollar this year, dropping steeply in value early last week. But Russian President Vladimir Putin said the currency would eventually rise again.

Wang, speaking to reporters over the weekend, said Russia also had the “wisdom” to get out of difficulties, the newspaper reported Monday.

“If the Russian side needs, we will provide necessary assistance within our capacity,” he said, noting that the two countries had consistently helped each other.

China’s trade minister, also speaking at the weekend, proposed more use of the renminbi in settling trade with Russia, to ensure safe and reliable trade, Reuters reported Monday.

The two countries have close diplomatic and economic ties, particularly in the energy sector.
