Among the multitudes on New York’s Fifth Avenue last weekend, Chinese shoppers spotted Bo Guagua, the son of disgraced former Chongqing party boss Bo Xilai, the World Journal reported Wednesday.
During the younger Bo’s Christmas shopping spree at the retail mecca, he was seen in luxury department store Bergdorf Goodman toting a range of shopping bags bearing luxury brands.
This is the first time Bo, 27, has been seen in public since he was enrolled as a student at Columbia Law School in New York last year.
His appearance comes amid online speculation he is one of the targets of China’s Fox Hunt campaign, which is aimed at corrupt fugitive officials overseas, the report said.
An overseas Chinese was quoted as saying that although Bo Xilai and his wife, Gu Kailai, remain in prison, their son looked as though he was enjoying his luxurious lifestyle.
The princeling seldom has contact with Chinese students, spending most of his time with American classmates, an overseas Chinese student at Columbia University said.
Bo Guagua’s father was sentenced to life imprisonment in September last year for corruption and abuse of power. The previous month, Gu was handed a suspended death sentence for murder.
