Actress Lana Wong Ha-wai, 83, has announced plans to run in the coming elections.
The vivacious performer, known for her glamorous attires and high-profile public appearances, posted a picture of herself on her Facebook page and said she would use it for her campaign poster, Ming Pao Daily reported.
The post drew a lot of likes from fans and friends, who said they hope she would run against Blue Ribbon leader Leticia Lee, who earlier said she might run in the District Council election later this year or the Legislative Council polls scheduled for 2016.
While netizens welcomed her foray into politics, many suggested that she reveal the exact position she is running for while others said she should start raising campaign funds.
Wong said: “I don’t encourage people to smoke, therefore please do not support illegally imported cigarettes!”
Her response may seem a little off the mark, but “illegally imported cigarettes” in Cantonese is pronounced the same way as Leticia Lee’s Chinese name.
During the Occupy campaign, Lee helped launch the Blue Ribbon movement in support of the police officers who were being assailed for their use of excessive force against the young activists.
