A woman was charged with animal abuse after two of her three pet dogs were killed in her attempt to commit suicide by burning charcoal at her Yuen Long home, Apple Daily reported Thursday.
The 37-year-old woman surnamed Chi, who recently broke up with her 43-year-old boyfriend, decided to put an end to her life, and apparently to take her three dogs with her, on Tuesday.
Around 5 p.m., as she was choking from the charcoal fumes inside her enclosed apartment, she called for help by texting her ex-boyfriend, who managed to arrive at the scene by 7 p.m. and found that Chi had passed out.
The boyfriend called the police and Chi was rushed to the hospital. She regained conciousness but two of her dogs died.
Chi’s condition stabilized and she was put under observation. That’s when the police decided to file charges against her for cruelty to animals. She was allowed to post bail.
A representative of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said a white Pomeranian was found dead when police arrived the scene, and one of the two remaining dogs died despite resuscitation attempts.
