A 31-year-old banker jumped to his death from an office tower in Hong Kong’s Central financial district Tuesday apparently due to unhappiness over his relationship with his girlfriend, Apple Daily reported.
Tim Lui, an assistant vice president in the risk management division at the Hong Kong office of Industrial Bank Co. (601166.CN), was found lying in a flower bed by a security guard at Citibank Plaza early yesterday.
The executive, who was said to be making about HK$1 million a year, is an alumnus of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He joined Industrial Bank only earlier this month, according to the report.
He was wearing a suit when he was found in the flower bed by the security guard. He is believed to have jumped off the roof of the 40-storey ICBC Tower on Garden Road at around 7 am.
Neighbors at Lui’s self-owned apartment in Kennedy Town said they were shocked to learn of his death. They described the young banker as an optimistic, easy-going and sports-loving person.
But Lui, who had been active on social media platforms, recently cancelled his Facebook and WhatsApp accounts.
Police didn’t find any suicide note, and initial investigations ruled out work pressure as the motive.
Unhappiness over his personal life is what may have prompted him to take his own life, the report said.
Shortly before committing suicide, Lui is said to have sent his girlfriend an email saying that he was not happy with their relationship.
