Facebook now has more users than the population of mainland China, where it is not available.
The number of users of the world’s largest social network rose 13 per cent over the past year to 1.4 billion, the Financial Times reported.
The firm’s results beat expectations in the fourth quarter as advertisers rushed to spend money on digital ads for the crucial Christmas shopping season.
Facebook reported net income of US$701 million in the quarter, up from US$523 million for the same period the year before, and US$2.9 billion for all of 2014, almost double the total for 2013.
However, fourth-quarter costs and expenses jumped 87 per cent from a year earlier to US$2.7 billion.
The California-based firm reported revenues of US$3.85 billion for the quarter and US$12.4 billion for the full year.
Mobile advertising revenue grew to 69 per cent of total revenue.
