Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown, so the saying goes, reminding us that glory can be fleeting.
In fact, it took just seconds for the newly crowned Miss Amazon to lose her tiara — literally — even before it could land on her head.
Carolina Toledo, 20, was being crowned when runner-up Sheislane Hayalla swiped the crown and threw it to the ground as cameras clicked and other participants and a stunned audience watched in disbelief.
Organizers rushed to retrieve the crown as security officials went backstage to stop her attacker after she stormed off the stage.
Hayalla, 23, pointed an accusing finger at Toledo, saying the law student had fixed the beauty pageant in the Brazilian city of Manaus, according to Mail Online.
Pageant officials are deciding whether to punish Hayalla, whose runner-up finish means she would normally be expected to participate in events throughout the year, representing her state.
The Miss Amazon winner will represent her state in the national Miss Brazil beauty contest.
Miss Amazon winners normally do well in the national competition. Terezinha Morango, the 1957 winner, went on to win Miss Brazil before coming second in the Miss Universe contest that same year.
Twelve women took part in this year’s final. The winner won her place in the final by dominating the local Miss Manaus beauty contest.
Hayalla, a model and biology student, won in 2013 and last year.
