Jolie, Gates more admired than Clinton, Obama

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie and Microsoft founder Bill Gates are the world’s most admired people, beating US President Barack Obama and his potential successor Hillary Clinton, according to the latest poll by market researcher YouGov.

Now what is that supposed to tell us? That the work of humanitarians and philantropists are considered more significant than that of global politicians?

Gates is known for donating billions of dollars to promote education and reduce poverty in some of the world’s most impoverished nations, while Jolie, wife of American heartthrob Brad Pitt, is known for her humanitarian activities, particularly as a Special Envoy for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

From China, the politician beats the actor in the male category with President Xi Jinping grabbing the third position after Gates and Obama, while action star Jackie Chan is fourth.

Among women, Jolie is followed by education activist and the world’s youngest Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, Hillary Clinton and United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II. US First Lady Michelle Obama is No. 5.

In a separate US-alone survey, President Obama and Hillary Clinton are the most admired, something that bodes well for the Democratic Party as the 2016 presidential election nears.

“The two towering figures of Democratic Party politics are also the most admired man and woman in the United States,” the Washington Examiner quotes the pollster as saying.

“Though Hillary has not officially declared her candidacy for the 2016 presidential elections, she is widely considered a favorite to follow Barack Obama into the White House. As this year’s Most Admired survey shows, she enjoys widespread public esteem, both here and abroad.”

The YouGov survey results:
