Fake HK$1,000 note more like Zimbabwean play money

New counterfeit banknotes with a twist have emerged in Hong Kong.

A local cashier was handed a fake HK$1,000 note based on a Zimbabwean banknote, Next Media’s Nextplus website reported.

The counterfeit note is not difficult to identify.

The colors in which it is printed are similar to those of the genuine one, but the Chinese characters for Standard Chartered Bank appear underneath the words  “RESERVE BANK OF ZIMBABWE” in English.

The image of three rocks on the note is the one on a Zimbabwean note. However, 1,000 Zimbabwean dollars would be worth merely US$2.76.

A picture of the fake note was posted on Facebook by the cashier, who was “feeling fed up” after someone from the mainland tried to pass off the counterfeit as a real HK$1,000 note.
