Chinese tourists are not the only ones behaving badly abroad and westerners are equally unruly, according to the official People’s Daily Online.
After so much negative news about them, Chinese tourists are almost always seen as lacking good sense and manners, it said.
However, it said it’s debatable whether they are any worse than their western counterparts.
The website listed five examples of “uncivilized” behavior by westerners:
1. Taking nude photos in Angkor Wat
Cambodian police arrested two sisters from the United States on Feb. 6 for taking nude photos of each other in Angkor Wat, a World Heritage site.
A court ordered their deportation and banned them from the country for four years. They were also fined US$250.
On Jan. 29, three French tourists were thrown out of the country for a similar offense.
2. Mass urination in Shanghai
Six foreigners were spotted urinating on a viaduct in Shanghai in March 2013. Two were arrested and fined 100 yuan (US$16) each.
3. Urinating on the Great Wall
In August 2005, a western tourist was caught relieving himself on the Great Wall. The tourist was with a group that rented a tower in the World Heritage site for an all-night party.
4. Vandalizing the Great Wall
“I was here” or some such words in English have been carved into the delicate bricks of the Great Wall.
5. Ignoring “no swimming” warnings
In July 2007, three Frenchmen jumped into the Thousand Island lake (Qiandaohou) in Zhejiang province, ignoring warnings while their three companions sat naked on the pier in full view of other tourists.
A survey by United States online marketplace Living Social last year found that Chinese tourists were the second worst after the Americans, according to People’s Daily.
