An Indonesian domestic helper was in critical condition after being hit by a granite platform that fell several storeys from a building in North Point on Wednesday.
The 33-year-old helper, Elis, was at the patio of a second floor unit of Chu Kee Building on King’s Road in North Point when the accident occurred at 4:29 a.m., am730 reported Thursday.
The granite platform, about a square meter in size and weighing 100 kilograms, fell from an external air-conditioner on the fifth floor of the building and hit the helper’s waist area after breaking through a fabric awning.
Police and personnel from the Buildings Department inspected the premises to see if there were any illegal constructions. The building is reportedly being used by Sunlight Employment Agency as a hostel for domestic helpers.
Elis has just completed her first two-year employment contract in Hong Kong and was staying at the flat awaiting the approval of a new contract.
Elis was rushed to the hospital and was reported to be in critical condition.
A representative from Sunlight Employment Agency said the patio is not being used for accommodation and only for storage of helpers’ belongings.
