US drone strike kills Nairobi carnage mastermind

A militant leader believed to be the mastermind of a deadly attack on a Nairobi shopping mall in 2013 has been killed in a US drone strike.

Adnan Garaar was traveling with a group in southern Somalia, 250 kilometers west of the capital Mogadishu, Reuters reported Thursday.

“He posed a major threat to the region and the international community and was connected to the West Gate Mall attack in Nairobi, Kenya,” the Pentagon said in a statement.

“His death has dealt another significant blow to the al Shabaab terrorist organization in Somalia.”

The Narobi carnage blamed on the militant group killed 67 people.

The drone strike hit a vehicle carrying Garaar near the town of Dinsoor. Residents said the vehicle was completely burned.
