Frenchman jumps to death in HK in HIV-related case: report

A 43-year-old Frenchman is said to have committed suicide by jumping from a building in Hong Kong’s Happy Valley on Sunday.

The man is believed to have taken his life as he was unhappy after being diagnosed as HIV-positive, Ming Pao Daily reported.

The police haven’t found any note, but suspect that it was an act of suicide, the paper said.

The man, a senior executive at a multinational advertising agency, had been living on the 16th floor of an apartment building named The Altitude, according to the report.

Peter Pang Kai-mau, an emergency doctor, assured people at the accident site that they won’t be at risk, as the HIV virus can’t be transmitted through air.

But he warned the police officers who dealt with the Frenchman’s remains to be careful. If the officers had contact the blood of the deceased person, there is a risk of infection, Pang said.

However, the report said that the personnel who were investigating the case at the site all wore protective clothing.
