Even in her wildest dreams, Janicel Lubina, a 19-year-old lass from an impoverished village in the Philippines, never thought of becoming a beauty queen.
When she was a third year high school student, her father suffered a stroke and she had to stop her studies to support her family.
First she worked in a farm and later followed her mother to work as a domestic helper in Manila.
Despite the poor hand fate had dealt her, she never lost hope.
In a recent interview, Lubina said an opportunity to change one’s life could come and go in the blink of an eye, but she’s always ready to seize the moment and make the most of it.
She has held on to that belief, and on Sunday night, she was proclaimed Binibining Pilipinas-International, a national beauty contest that made her her country’s representative to this year’s Miss International Beauty Pageant, Apple Daily reported.
Not too long ago, while working as a maid in Manila, a make-up artist befriended her and later persuaded her to join a local beauty contest.
At first Lubina thought her friend was just teasing her. But her friend never gave up until she agreed.
In her first outing in 2013, she came runner-up, and in the same year, she was crowned Miss Bikini Philippines.
Following her early triumphs, the 5’7” charmer continued her campaign for a national beauty title, goaded and guided by her agent.
To be able to shed her village shyness, her friend enrolled her in several finishing courses, while she pursued her studies, one of the prizes in the last beauty contest she won. And now she is ready to conquer the world.
Lubina says she is proud of her own Cinderella story, and she hopes it can inspire other girls to overcome their predicaments and realize their potentials.
