Violent incident involving South Asians stirs online debate

A man was beaten up mercilessly by a group of fellow South Asians outside the Oriental 188 shopping center in Wan Chai Sunday afternoon, causing shock and anger among the general public.

As a video clip surfaced of the attack, there was furious criticism and intense debate in online forums about the brazen violence in a public place.

Netizens commented that some immigrants don’t seem to have any respect for Hong Kong’s laws, Headline Daily reported.

In the seven-second clip that went viral soon after it was uploaded, a man in a blue shirt was seen battered so badly that he couldn’t stand straight afterward.

The clip also showed that the attackers kept raining blows even as the man was crouched on the ground.

Some witnesses were frightened by the violence and left the scene in a hurry.

According to the police, the victim, a 26-year-old South Asian, was taken to the Ruttonjee Hospital afterwards.

The attack is said to have resulted from a previous quarrel between the two sides.
