A news report by South Korean television network KBS about the bad behavior of some mainland Chinese tourists at a private women’s university in central Seoul has been picked up by Chinese media after it went viral on social media.
Many Chinese tourists were found to be visiting Ewha Womans University, one of the country’s most prestigious universities, to take pictures of students wearing short skirts and hot pants on campus, Chinese media ifeng.com reported on March 18, citing the KBS report.
Some of the tourists even uploaded the photos and videos of young Korean ladies on adult websites, according to the report.
A KBS reporter asked a Chinese tourist in Putonghua why she and her fellow tourists insist on entering the campus and taking pictures of the students despite a huge sign at the entrance that says tourists are not welcome, the tourist replied: “All of us are Asians.”
A university student told KBS that Chinese tourists were treating the campus like a zoo.
The KBS report was first posted on YouTube on Nov. 27, 2014.
It received scant attention in Hong Kong and mainland Chinese media until a translator made it available in Chinese through a post on the Facebook account of the Taiwan Hong Kong Democratic Link on March 17. [Click here]
After iFeng.com cited the KBS report, it was widely shared by other mainland Chinese media.
Last year, Ewha students put up a giant sign at the campus gate telling visitors to refrain from entering buildings and taking pictures as the campus is not a tourist site. The notice is in simplified Chinese, Korean and English.
Chinese tourists have been drawn to the university by its historical buildings and shopping malls.
Aside from the charming shops, they also want to stroll around the campus and take pictures of the fashionable female students. Besides, the name of the university sounds like “li fa”, which means “profit and fortune”, in Putonghua, People.com.cn reported.
