Triad suspects demand protection money from mahjong players

Three suspected members of Sun Yee On, one of Hong Kong’s leading triads, were arrested this week for allegedly demanding “protection money” from two women, Apple Daily reported Friday.

The three men, aged 18, 20 and 22, are believed to be triad members active in the Tseung Kwan O and Kwun Tong districts, police said.

Two women, aged 60 and 36, who live in Kin Ming Estate in Tseung Kwan O, called police on Tuesday after being harassed by the trio.

The pair said they were playing mahjong when the three men knocked on their doors and demanded HK$3,000 in protection money, saying the women would need to watch out if they did not comply with the request.

The women had to call police before the gangsters would leave their homes.

Police identified the three suspects from CCTV footage at the housing estate and arrested them Wednesday night.
