More than 1,000 people have been arrested after authorities in Guangdong province smashed an online gambling syndicate.
Fifteen gang leaders are in custody awaiting charges, Ming Pao Daily reported Thursday, citing Ministry of Public Security official Lu Feng.
The syndicate operated 199 lottery websites with 400,000 active players, police investigators said.
Monthly bets topped 400 billion yuan (US$64.52 billion) in more than 1,000 wagers.
The gang also ran 74 related companies offering Mark Six lottery, with 150,000 members betting more than 9 billion yuan each month.
Altogether, the 550,000 members lost 15.9 billion yuan in December alone, according to the police.
The police operation, which began in early 2014, led to the biggest gambling bust in the country’s history, Lu was quoted as saying.
When investigators closed the case in January, they had made arrests in Shantou, Guangdong, Taiwan and Thailand where the syndicate’s computer servers were located.
