i-CABLE finance news anchor in apparent suicide

A television news anchor was found dead at her family’s residence in Fairview Park, Yuen Long, on Wednesday, after apparently committing suicide by inhaling charcoal fumes.

Bonnie Leung Ching-man, 34, an i-CABLE finance news anchor, was found by her mother lying unconscious inside her room, with a pot of burning charcoal beside her, Ming Pao Daily reported.

Leung was certified dead by paramedics who were called to the scene, and it was understood that she might have ended her life because of work pressure.

News of Leung’s death was confirmed by Ronald Chiu, executive director of i-CABLE News Limited, on Wednesday night.

Leung worked at Asia Television Ltd. before joining i-CABLE News in 2009 as a financial news reporter.

She anchored several financial TV programs and was perceived as a calm, kind and friendly person by her colleagues, who were shocked by the news.

Sources said Leung had lost weight significantly due to work issues but she did not reveal details to colleagues, only saying that she had no appetite.

Colleagues remembered Leung as a rather quiet person who did not mingle much with co-workers, and that could be one reason why they had not suspected her of having any emotional stress.

In an official statement released early Thursday, i-CABLE expressed sorrow and condolences to Leung’s family.

The TV station said it had contacted Leung’s family and would provide them with the necessary assistance.
