A 70-year-old woman died on the spot after a tourist bumped into her while running down the stairs at the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, the Beijing News reported Friday.
The head of the woman, surnamed Cui, hit a wall after she was knocked down by a Canadian woman surnamed Fortin, 38, who rushed down the stairs and ran into Cui, a relative of the dead woman was quoted as saying.
Cui was visiting Beijing from Heilongjiang province with her family.
A preliminary investigation by police showed Cui’s death Wednesday was an accident, a statement on the official Weibo microblog of the Huairou county local government said Thursday.
Further investigation is underway, it said.
Police suggested that Cui’s family try to seek compensation in civil court from the Canadian, as she was not criminally liable, Cui’s relative was quoted as saying.
The family was also told that Fortin’s visa will expire on Saturday and police cannot prevent her from returning to her country.
Lawyers recommended that Cui’s family launch a lawsuit against Fortin immediately so that the court could prevent her from leaving China, the report said.
