China set to overtake US as top cause of global warming

China is set to overtake the US as the main cause of man-made global warming, in a historic shift that may ramp up pressure on Beijing to take more action, Reuters reported.

China’s cumulative greenhouse gas emissions since 1990 will outstrip those of the US in 2015 or 2016, experts in Norway and the US were quoted as saying.

“A few years ago China’s per capita emissions were low, its historical responsibility was low. That’s changing fast,” Glen Peters of the Center for International Climate and Environmental Research, Oslo (CICERO), was quoted as saying.

The Norwegian agency believes China will surpass the US this year as the top cause of modern global warming.

Using slightly different data, the US-based World Resources Institute estimated that China’s cumulative carbon dioxide emissions will total 151 billion ton for 1990-2016, overtaking the US total of 147 billion next year.
